The Case

It was a sullen night and Mr.D'souza was sitting in paramount silence thinking and reflecting upon the cognizant cases in his patrolling car. The night had been very slow paced and time seemed to stick somewhere. His car was parked near a drop box on the corner of Gandhi Street. The light was falling directly on the bumper and Mr. D'souza had rolled down the window frame to let cool breeze strike him in the car.

His partner on petrol had gone to buy a pack of cigarette and a bottle of water. Mr. D'souza lighted the last cigarette he had and checked the time, it was around 2 of midnight and his partner had not yet returned. He abused his partner for being so lethargic and drew in one stroke of cigarette. He kept staring on the rare mirror with skewed eyes and stretched brows. There was nothing in the rare mirror. He furiously uttered some abuses and then again kept looking in the rare mirror.

Just in the time when Mr. D'souza was about to push out the door someone from the corner came and collided into the car. Seeing the police car the man took steps back and limping out ran on the side skirts out of the sight. Mr. D'souza came out and hailed the man but the man was in no sight. Mr. D'souza frowned turned around and found a case lying there.

The case was of wooden flex and was marvelously crafted with steel fringes on the corner. The upper surface of the case had a slit a very small one and the case was formed in form of pyramid. Mr. D'souza looked back in the direction where the man had escaped there was acute silence and then again he looked into the case. He picked up the case and kept the case on bumper and he saw his partner returning. He shouted “JK! Where the hell had you been” and without waiting for the reply he began examining the case.

The case was sealed with very modern technique. There was code key and a lock hanged over the code button. Mr. D'souza again turned to the side where the man had escaped but seeing no sign of anyone he again turned to examining the case. He lifted the case it seemed heavy and with intriguing eyes he turned the case upside down. As he stood examining his partner JK came near him and said ”sir, got what you wanted” as he  stretched his hand with a wrapped packet towards Mr. D'souza. Mr. D'souza was still occupied in the case and told JK to put the packet into the car without raising his head.

The bottom surface of the case had a little handle and it seemed as if it was not locked but was stuffed to the inside barrier. Mr. D'souza smiled as an incident of similar type came in his mind. He lifted the case up and shook it to and fro. Nothing moved inside and Mr. D'souza ‘s smile broadened.

The similar case he had found about a year ago in which there was gold. The thief had dropped it in an attempt to hide himself and Mr. D'souza had collected the case with delightful and jumping hands. He was thinking the scenario when his partner called out “sir, what’s in this case”. Mr. D'souza woke up as if he was dreaming and said “let me see in”. He turned the case upside down and put his finger on the handle. With a wide grin he pulled the handle and a BOOM! The place was clouded with dense fog and the fire gulped Mr. D'souza and his partner.

Quite some distance a man peeped out, he saw the dense cloud and he moved towards the direction as he peeped down the corner, he smiled. He had done his job, he took out his cell phone punched a number and said “keep my money ready, had my work done”. Smiling, he left the place.
Next morning, Mr. D'souza and his partner were pulled out burnt and dead. An officer called out to his junior, “the man was to bring out a case against most wanted one, now see he is lying dead”.
